Pinot Grigio is a variety of the Pinot Gris grape, and produces a wide range of white wine styles. The grapes are often referred to as grey, and the colours of the wine vary greatly from a deep yellow to a mild shade of pink.

Every part of this white wine is interesting from the grapes to the taste of the wine. Although the colour of Pinot Grigio varies from country to country, in Italy and Switzerland it is a soft pink colour. The style of this wine varies from region to region, and in Northern Italy lighter, ‘spritzy’ wine is produced. Like Italy’s famous red wines, the Pinot Grigio grape grows better in the Northern areas of the country.

The Pinot Grigio grape that is grown in the wine valleys of Alsace is suited to the rich soil that is found there. The clay that is present in this soil helps to produce a rich, dry wine enjoyed by many all over the world. The grapes that are produced in Alsace are often produced from wineries that have generations of experience. Alongside Riesling the Pinot Gris grape is considered amongst the most sought after grape.

The Pinot Gris grape is grown on over 13% of vineyard lands in Alsace, and the soil conditions allow some amazing varieties to be produced. The long dry autumns allow the grapes to hang longer, which result in recognisable and strong flavours.

The small clusters of the Pinot Gris grapes do mature very early giving them high sugar content. Although the grape can be grown in other countries they do not have as much success. However, the grape is a fairly easy variety to grow, and in Italy the grape is commonly known as Pinot Grigio. This type of wine has become very popular with people all over the world. There is no mistaking where the Pinot Grigio wine was produced, and it is thought to be a simple wine to select.

Due to the fact that this grape requires cool growing conditions it has not spread that far around the world. Countries such as Argentina and New Zealand have been able to produce the grape with success to enable them to produce this great white wine. The Pinot Grigio wine is classed as an early to market wine meaning that it will be produced, bottled, and sold very quickly.

Often this variety of white wine will be on the market within 12 weeks after fermentation. Pinot Grigio has become one of the most popular wines to drink, and has taken over the top spot from the ever popular Chardonnay. This style of white wine has become popular to enjoy when eating out, as well as in the home.
