The equipment kit must contain two jars or barrels, one for fermenting and the other for bottling the beer. Check the fermenting container for air locks and safety vents. A racking hose, hydrometer, capping tools and caps should also be included.

These should be 3-gallon or more containers which are better made of glass.

For beginners who do not yet know to adjust the acid and/or sugar content of the beer, hydrometers are not really functional. However, to start learning to use them, they should be included in the starter kit. These are glass wands with calibrated values that can be used to determine the sweetness of the liquid or its alcohol content.

Racking home brew beer

Following the completion of fermentation, the fermenting jar should be placed on a stool behind and above the bottling jar. The stiff end of the racking hose is inserted into the fermenter and the other end left to hang inside the bottling jar. The wort is them siphoned out from the fermenter into the bottler, leaving the dregs behind in the fermenter.
